Owen Hargreaves likens Liverpool ace Ryan Gravenberch to Paul Pogba
One would not naturally compare Liverpool star Ryan Gravenberch to Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba but former Manchester United man Owen Hargreaves has gone on and done just that.
The Dutch ace arrived at Anfield from Bayern Munich earlier this summer. He has taken well to life on Merseyside and continues to showcase just why he was so highly regarded while at Ajax Amsterdam.
Gravenberch’s development stalled at Bayern Munich but he is once again smiling and continues to thrive under Jurgen Klopp. In many ways, landing him could prove to be a coup for the Reds in the years to come.
Hargreaves has now joined Gravenberch’s increasing list of admirers. Speaking on The Kelly and Wrighty Show (h/t Mirror), the Englishman went on to compare the Liverpool star to Paul Pogba. For some reason, he believes the comparison will annoy Liverpool fans.
“He reminds me, Liverpool fans won’t like this, but he is Pogba-esque. He can do a lot of good stuff.”
Comparisons to Pogba are likely to get us excited rather than be annoying. The Frenchman is one of the finest midfielders of his generation, even if he never quite managed to fulfil his potential. But then given the toxicity at Manchester United, the club is equally responsible for his fall from grace.
Pogba on his day was a match winning superstar. He led France to World Cup glory in 2018 and could have gone on to achieve much more had he received the right guidance at Old Trafford.
Thankfully, Jurgen Klopp knows how to mould a superstar and Gravenberch is in the right hands at Anfield. Just 21, the Dutchman has the best years of his career ahead of him. If his opening few games as a Reds star is anything to go by, we have surely hit the jackpot.
Hargreaves believes the midfielder is a fine addition to the Reds’ roster. While Pogba’s career has fizzled out, we hope Gravenberch goes on to achieve great things in a red shirt. Bayern’s loss is after all our gain.
“I am amazed he didn’t play more for Bayern because I think he is going to be a good addition to their midfield.”

Paul Pogba’s career is a cautionary tale of how talent alone cannot get you to the top. While he still achieved much during his time at Juventus and with France, the stint at Manchester United was more of a miss than a hit. Hopefully, Gravenberch is just getting started in what is a long road ahead for the 21-year-old.
