Liverpool star Harvey Elliott talks about Jurgen Klopp’s 2020 PL-winning gesture
Jurgen Klopp and his squad delivered the elusive Premier League title after a 30-year wait, marking an unforgettable moment for the club and its supporters. While the achievement brought joy to many, it also showcased the kindness and integrity of the Liverpool manager as recently revealed by Harvey Elliott.
Premier League guidelines at the time dictated that medals would only be awarded to players who had made a minimum of five appearances for the championship-winning team. Harvey Elliott found himself on the cusp of receiving such an honour.
Elliott’s journey during the 2019-2020 season was one of promise and potential. He made appearances for the senior squad but fell just shy of the stipulated number of appearances to qualify for a medal. By technicality, he was ineligible for this prestigious recognition.
Speaking exclusively to ECHO, Eliott revealed a heartwarming gesture from Jurgen Klopp and here is what the 20-year-old had to say about the manager delivering on a promise made a few weeks before the trophy ceremony:
“I am not sure if it was [Klopp’s] medal, it could have been his but I got one at the end of the day, I walked into the changing room after the parade and the presentations and they gave it to me then.”
“I mean I can’t really describe how I felt I was just over the moon and sending pictures to my mum and dad [saying]: ‘I’ve got a medal! I’ve got a medal!’ And they were in the ground as well, so I was able to go up and show them and have a bit of a celebration with them. It was just, you know, a great feeling.”
In a heartfelt gesture, Klopp decided to present Elliott with a Premier League winners’ medal of his own. This remarkable token of appreciation and recognition showcased not only Klopp’s dedication to nurturing young talent but also his humanity and consideration for the emotional well-being of his players.
Klopp’s gesture not only presented Elliott with a tangible symbol of the Reds’ historic achievement but also reinforced the values and ethos that make the club and the manager so beloved.
Elliott’s story is a testament to the human side of football, where compassion and kindness can shine as brightly as the gleam of a Premier League winners’ medal.
