With time, you grow”- Joe Gomez reveals his preferred position for Liverpool

Joe Gomez opens up about his favourite position for Liverpool

Liverpool star Joe Gomez has faced numerous challenges throughout his career, from injuries to changing roles on the pitch. Recently, he opened up about his evolving role and how he’s ready to embrace new challenges, even if he still sees himself primarily as a central defender.

Gomez’s journey at Liverpool has been filled with both highs and lows. He arrived at Anfield in 2015 when Brendan Rodgers signed him from Charlton Athletic. His potential was evident, and Liverpool’s coaching staff saw him as a future star in the making.

However, Gomez’s path to success was not without obstacles. He suffered a season-ending patellar tendon injury in November 2020, which forced him to spend a significant amount of time on the sidelines. After his return, he struggled to reach the same levels of performance he had displayed before the injury.

The presence of Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate, Joel Matip, and the emergence of academy graduate Jarell Quansah is proving to be costly for Joe. These developments have led to Gomez taking on a more versatile role in the team. In his last four appearances across various competitions, including the Premier League, League Cup, and Europa League, Gomez has seen himself deployed as a right-back (first half against Toulouse), left-back (Luton Town), and centre-back (Toulouse at home).

Versatile Gomez

In a recent interview with Sky Sports via ECHO, the player talked about where he would like to play ideally, and here is what Gomez

had to say:

“I think trying to embrace whatever position I play is probably more important for me. If I was to write on paper where I play, I would probably still write centre-back. But with time, you grow in appreciation for the game and just learning it.”

Joe acknowledged that as he matures and gains experience, he has come to appreciate the game more and is more open to embracing different positions on the pitch rather than narrowing down his path to only featuring as a centre-back.

Liverpool star Joe Gomez has been the longest-serving for the club among the current players.

While Gomez may still view himself as a central defender, his ability to perform in various roles across the backline is a testament to his growth as a player and his dedication to Liverpool’s cause.
