Manchester United eye a move for Liverpool target Andre

It was probably coming after Fluminense secured a victory over Boca Juniors in the finals of the latest edition of the Copa Libertadores. 22-year-old Andre Trindade of Nense who has seen himself on the transfer radar of Liverpool, also finds himself as a transfer target for our arch-rivals Manchester United.

The Brazilian international was a huge part of Fluminense’s continental success this season and provided strong cover in the middle of the park for the Brazilian giants. The Reds, who are on the lookout for defensive midfielders, had Andre on their radar, but with interest from several other clubs developing, Jurgen Klopp’s men need to act quickly to get the player on board.

An in-depth study of the player’s characteristics brings to the fore that the player, more than a traditional defensive-minded midfielder, is a meia-armador, better known as a regista in Europe. A deep-lying playmaker that is. To make it much easier to understand, he operates deep to play a Thiago role, instead of being an out-and-out CDM, more like a Fabinho or a Rodri.

United have reportedly made an approach for Fluminense midfielder Andre amid claims they are looking to replace Casemiro. That is according to FootballTransfers via Manchester Evening News. While it is true that Liverpool have for quite a while, shown interest in the player, we could rather do with someone who is much more defensive-minded, and more like Fabinho, who now plies his trade for Al Ittihad in Saudi Arabia.

Do the Reds need Andre?

While Andre’s playing style might not align with Liverpool’s urgent need for a traditional defensive midfielder, he offers a different dynamic in the middle of the park. This shift in playing style is something to consider when evaluating our interest in the player.

We have enough creativity in the middle of the park thanks to the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. A number of Liverpool fans feel that getting on board Andre would help negate most of our problems in the middle of the park, but it is important to understand that, we could do better if we get an out-and-out no-nonsense defensive midfielder over any other kind of midfielder.

Manchester United’s reported interest adds an extra layer of complexity to the transfer saga. United’s pursuit of the Brazilian midfielder is fueled by their desire to find a replacement for Casemiro, a similar shift in style to Liverpool’s search for a defensive midfielder.
