Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister endured a hilarious blunder in a quickfire question round when he failed to correctly spell the tricky surname of new teammate Dominik Szoboszlai.
In a video posted on Instagram by Liverpool FC hosted with EA Sports, Mac Allister, and fellow Red Darwin Nunez took turns answering rapid-fire questions about Liverpool and football.
When asked to spell Szoboszlai’s name, Mac Allister pondered for a moment before confidently saying “S-Z-O-B-O-S-L-A-I” after which he was corrected. The Argentine World Cup winner looked a bit disappointed with his inability to correctly pronounce his teammate’s name.
Mac Allister can be forgiven for fumbling the letters given his native Spanish. Szoboszlai’s lengthy Hungarian surname is undoubtedly one of the most challenging to spell in football.
The incident provided some funny bonding between Mac Allister and Nunez as new Liverpool teammates. The two shared a healthy and funny camaraderie while answering the questions.
The hosts came up with a new fun rule that made both Alexis Mac Allister and Darwin Nunez balance a football on their arms each time they got an answer wrong. The number of balls gradually increased each time they came up wrong.
Mac Allister was more knowledgeable about the questions asked but ultimately lost as he couldn’t balance his share of the footballs. By the end of the round, Nunez was balancing seven while his Argentine teammate was struggling with five.
The lighthearted quiz was intended to test the duo’s familiarity with their new club since joining in the summer. Judging by the laughs throughout, Mac Allister and Nunez are settling in nicely.
Szoboszlai joined Liverpool from RB Leipzig for £60m in the summer, becoming the club’s fourth most expensive signing ever. Despite the huge fee, the 22-year-old has quickly adapted to exceed expectations at Anfield. While Mac Allister may require more time practising the spelling, he and Szoboszlai have already built an excellent understanding in Liverpool’s engine room.
The pair have quickly struck up a fruitful partnership, providing energy and creativity in midfield. If they maintain their current form, nobody will care how to spell their names. Mac Allister and Szoboszlai’s seamless link-up play is speaking volumes out on the pitch.
