Liverpool star Curtis Jones talks about breaching the 100-game mark for the Reds
At only 22 years of age, Curtis Jones breached the 100-game milestone for Liverpool. It is surely a remarkable feat considering his recent injury struggles and prolonged periods on the sidelines. However, the player, since the second part of last season, has reinvented himself and has been among our sharpest players.
Jones reached the 100-game mark in the Reds’ Premier League encounter against Wolves that ended 3-1 in Liverpool’s favour. He is only the third academy player to break the 100-appearance mark since Steven Gerrard.
The only others to do so are Trent Alexander-Arnold and Raheem Sterling. The latter is now a part of Mauricio Pochettino’s Chelsea side after a very successful spell at Manchester City post departing Anfield in 2015. Coming back to Jones, he is also the youngest player to captain a Liverpool side when he led the side out in a Fourth Round FA Cup fixture against Shrewsbury Town back in February of 2020.
Currently at 106 appearances, here is what Jones had to say on the ton and his ambitions going forward on the We Are Liverpool podcast via the club’s official website:
“I’m on 100 games but I feel it’s just the beginning and I want to just carry on and hold the form and keep it going.”
In all these games, the central midfielder has 11 goals and 12 assists for the Reds across all competitions. However, we all know his role in the team goes beyond goal contributions. The player is absolutely vital in Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool 2.0. Playing on the left side of the midfield, Jones plays a key role in ball retention and linking play.
Think of it as a Gini Wijnaldum role but with a greater creative aspect to it. Jones’ technique on the ball is absolutely top-notch and has the potential to be an extremely good box-to-box player if he continues on the positive trajectory he’s on.
His playing style goes beyond mere statistics, showcasing a level of maturity and understanding of the game that belies his age. As he continues on this positive trajectory, Jones has the potential to exceed expectations, and by significantly.
