Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai scores a double to secure Euro 2024 ticket for Hungary

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai sparked joyous scenes in Budapest on Sunday, celebrating his brilliant brace against Montenegro for his country by downing a traditional Palinka shot with elated Hungary supporters as covered by the Mirror.

The 23-year-old Liverpool star lit up the Puskas Arena, scoring two sensational goals to lead Hungary to a 3-1 comeback win over Montenegro in the Euro 2024 Group G qualifying match.

Szoboszlai’s first was a dazzling solo effort, as he jinked past four defenders before firing into the corner to equalize. Minutes later, he slotted home again with his weaker foot to put Hungary ahead after a smooth one-two with a teammate.

Szoboszlai’s exploits drew deserved plaudits from spectators and pundits alike. His first goal especially was a touch of individual brilliance Lionel Messi himself would have been proud to call his own.

While Szoboszlai’s magical goals will make the highlights reel, it was his celebratory drink with fans after the final whistle that created the lasting image of this momentous night. Though he pulled a face after swallowing the strong spirit, this was a day for Szoboszlai to savour.

Moments like this underline why Szoboszlai is so revered in his homeland after rising up the ranks to become Hungary’s talisman and leader.

Liverpool made a good decision in signing Szoboszlai

Performances like this illustrate why Liverpool were wise to invest £60m in prising Szoboszlai from RB Leipzig over the summer. The fee already looks a bargain based on his seamless adaptation to the Premier League.

In just a few months on Merseyside, the Hungarian has shown glimpses of developing into Steven Gerrard’s long-term successor as Liverpool’s driving force from midfield. His all-around game could see him dominate at Anfield for the next decade.

Witnessing his ability up close now, Reds supporters will be the ones shocked if he does not become a superstar.

With massive clashes against title rivals Manchester City and Tottenham approaching, Liverpool will hope Szoboszlai’s Budapest brilliance carries over. If so, his £60m price tag will continue looking like an absolute steal.
