Inter Milan set to offer new contract to midfielder Liverpool are ‘huge admirers’ of

Inter Milan to offer Liverpool target Nicolo Barella new contract

In a potential setback for Liverpool and Jurgen Klopp, recent reports suggest that Nicolo Barella is on the verge of signing a new contract with Inter Milan. The 26-year-old midfielder has long seen himself as a target for the Reds, making this development a noteworthy one for Liverpool.

Jurgen Klopp has expressed his admiration for Barella in the past, recognizing the Italian’s qualities as a midfielder. However, it seems that any hopes of bringing the talented midfielder to Anfield might see themselves dashed, with indications that Barella stands set to extend his stay at Inter Milan.

The lack of urgency in the contract negotiations, despite being at an early stage, adds a layer of uncertainty to Liverpool’s potential pursuit of Barella. The Italian midfielder’s skill set, characterized by his box-to-box capabilities and midfield control, surely aligns with the style of play often favoured by Klopp.

TEAMtalk via ECHO say that Nicolo Barella remains set to sign a new contract with Inter amid his links with Liverpool.

Do the Reds need Barella?

During the summer transfer window, Liverpool made strategic moves to bolster their squad, particularly in the midfield department. The emphasis was on acquiring players who could contribute to the team’s dynamics, ensuring a balance of creativity and defensive stability.

Given Liverpool’s current midfield composition, which includes the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister, Ryan Gravenberch, Curtis Jones, Harvey Elliott and Wataru Endo, the pursuit of a box-to-box player like Barella might not see itself among the most urgent of requirements at Liverpool. Klopp’s midfield options have been designed to offer versatility and depth, but there’s also an underlying need for a specialist defensive midfielder.

The departure of Fabinho in the summer left a void in the defensive midfield position, and while Wataru Endo has shown promise, acquiring a more proven player could enhance competition within the squad. A defensive midfielder with experience at the highest level would not only provide cover for key players but also elevate the overall quality of Liverpool’s midfield options.
