“I used to like Liverpool when I was younger”- Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero recalls his childhood support for the Reds

Manchester City legend Sergio Aguero was a Liverpool fan growing up

Sergio Aguero, the legendary striker who etched his name into Manchester City’s history books, confesses that his boyhood dream was to don the Liverpool jersey. The revelation adds an intriguing layer to Aguero’s football journey, highlighting his admiration for former Liverpool star Michael Owen during his formative years.

At the tender age of 10, Aguero found himself captivated by Owen’s exploits at Anfield. The English striker, known for his blistering pace and clinical finishing, left an indelible mark on young Aguero. Owen’s departure to Real Madrid in 2004 marked the end of an era, but his influence lingered, even reaching Aguero’s PlayStation sessions where he aimed to replicate Owen’s style on the virtual pitch.

Aguero’s childhood affinity for Liverpool adds a unique perspective to his illustrious career, especially considering the fierce rivalry that would later develop between his eventual club, Manchester City, and the Reds.

Speaking to Stake via The Mirror, here is what Aguero had to say about following Liverpool as a kid:

“I used to like Liverpool when I was younger because of Owen, who had also started as a teenager,”

“Even when I was playing on my Playstation, I tried to play like Owen!”

As Aguero matured into one of the most prolific strikers in the world, he became a pivotal figure in Manchester City’s epic title battles with Liverpool. The fixtures between these two football powerhouses grew into highly anticipated clashes, defining the landscape of English football.

What if?

Aguero’s journey, from a young fan inspired by Owen to a revered football icon, adds a layer of nostalgia to the beautiful game even though most fans do not like the way the Englishman left the club and then later on joined Manchester United as well.

Coming back to Aguero, as fate had it, he went on to join a Manchester City side that constantly challenged for and won trophies with Liverpool always following in at a close second.
