Roberto de Zerbi makes Alexis Mac Allister admission after Liverpool move

Brighton & Hove Albion manager Roberto De Zerbi has openly expressed his disappointment over the departure of Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool earlier this summer.

De Zerbi acknowledged his regret at losing a player of Mac Allister’s calibre, emphasizing the impact the Argentine had on Brighton’s style of play during the previous season.

During the past season, Mac Allister played a pivotal role for Brighton, often operating as a number 10. De Zerbi highlighted how this position allowed the team to have better control of the game. However, the departure of Mac Allister has prompted a shift in Brighton’s attacking approach.

Speaking to TNT Sports via football.london, here is what De Zerbi said:

“I am sorry to lose great players. Caicedo and Mac Allister, I am not happy. But I know very well where I am working, and the policy of the club is like this. We are playing with four attackers.”

“Last season Mac Allister often played as a number 10, and so we had more control of the game. Now, we are playing with four attacker – Joao Pedro, Ansu Fati, Evan Ferguson and [Danny] Welbeck. They are not a number 10. When they get the ball, they want to score.”

Liverpool, in securing Mac Allister‘s services, gained a versatile midfielder capable of contributing both defensively and offensively. The Argentine’s departure from Brighton marked another step in Liverpool’s strategic approach to bolstering their squad with quality additions.

Macca for the Reds!

Mac Allister’s adaptability and creative flair make him a valuable asset for Jurgen Klopp’s side. While De Zerbi may lament losing such a talented player, Liverpool fans are eager to witness the Argentine’s impact at Anfield.

However, such is the irony that until now, Macca has yet to feature in his preferred central midfield / attacking midfield role. The lack of a #6 at the club has Jurgen Klopp make the Argentine World Cup winner a makeshift defensive midfielder for the time being.

Sooner than later, we will surely see Mac Allister shine in the Red of Liverpool under Jurgen Klopp in a position where he is natural and does not have to shy away from making those attacking runs synonymous with him during his time down at East Sussex.
