Speaking from his new vantage point with Turkish giants Besiktas, former Liverpool midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain discussed summer Reds signing Dominik Szoboszlai – and revealed glowing reviews on the Hungarian from ex-teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold.
In an exclusive interview with Sky Sports, Ox admitted he remains an eager Liverpool observer from afar and has particularly enjoyed watching Szoboszlai’s seamless transition into his old midfield role this season.
Highlighting Szoboszlai’s well-rounded skill set, physical presence, and attacking flair, Ox feels the Hungarian epitomizes his stylistic ideals in a midfielder.
“I’ve really enjoyed watching Dominik Szoboszlai. He’s sort of taken over from my sort of role and I’m really impressed with how good of a player he is and that he plays the game, how I sort of always want to play the game.”
But the former Arsenal man intriguingly indicated Szoboszlai’s excellence has also caught the eye of Alexander-Arnold, one of Liverpool’s longest-serving stars.
“Trent tells me a lot how good he is as well. Trent says his shots are better than mine. He’s got everything,”
That eminently quotable line underlines how quickly Szoboszlai has won admiration from Liverpool stalwarts like Trent Alexander-Arnold with his smooth transition from RB Leipzig in a £60m dea
l.Having a secondary source as reputable as Trent vouch for Szoboszlai’s instant impact paints a vivid picture for Ox watching from afar in Turkey week-to-week.
Alexander-Arnold occupying a deeper role this term means he has enjoyed close-quarter views of Szoboszlai’s well-rounded repertoire. For Liverpool’s right-back playmaker to already rate Szoboszlai over Ox creatively speaks volumes.
While Ox clearly still feels strong Liverpool ties, Anfield increasingly belongs to a new generation like Szoboszlai. But Ox speaks glowingly on his successor, particularly when Trent’s ringing endorsement got quoted back to him.
If Alexander-Arnold indeed believes Szoboszlai’s shooting prowess exceeds Ox’s thunderous trademark hits in a Red shirt, Liverpool have uncovered a genuinely special talent.
