Times football writer Tony Cascarino highlighted the importance of Darwin Nunez’s form during the Premier League title chase for Liverpool
Former professional footballer Tony Cascarino emphasized the importance of Darwin Nunez’s form as Liverpool chases the Premier League title. Liverpool are currently at the top of the Premier League table but with a one-point advantage on Arsenal.
At the same time, Aston Villa and Manchester City are too close for comfort, leaving no margin for error. The Reds are yet to hit their best form, having conceded the first goal in many games this season.
Nunez has played an instrumental role for the Reds this season but his performances have been like Jekyll and Hyde. The Uruguay international remains consistently active on the pitch, contributing positively or adversely to the game.
Nunez has gone from giving the match-winning performance against Newcastle United to missing 15 big chances in the Premier League. The 24-year-old has made 22 appearances in all competitions, contributing with seven goals and seven assists.
Cascarino wrote in The Times that Nunez needs to be more prolific to help Liverpool win the Premier League. He said:
“If Liverpool are to have serious title aspirations then they have to get Darwin Nunez playing like he does for his country, Uruguay. “His form in World Cup qualifying for them is sensational. Nunez looks like the complete No 9 who scores against the best teams in the world such as Argentina and Brazil, links the play, and chases lost causes. But for Liverpool, something is just not right, and not many sides win the title with a misfiring No 9.”
There’s more to Nunez than just goal scoring as the explosive forward plays a huge role in the overall buildup. The Uruguay international’s movements help his teammate exploit the spaces when he takes away defenders with his runs.
Darwin Nunez lost the ball and made a perfect tackle to get it back and set up his game-sealing assist to Szoboszlai.

Furthermore, the 24-year-old has impressive stamina and a high work rate when the team loses possession. Nunez’s link-up play with Mohamed Salah has played a pivotal role in the Egyptian’s prolific run of form.
Nevertheless, Nunez needs to be more composed in front of the goal instead of rushing and lacking decisiveness. His off-the-ball movements and anticipation of the ball’s delivery showcase the Uruguay international’s exceptional execution.
