Paul Merson believes that Liverpool’s strong line-up of forwards can propel the team to Premier League glory
Liverpool stand at the top of the Premier League table with an impressive 37 points to their name. The Reds have fought well and hard this season. Jurgen Klopp’s men have won 11 of the 16 matches they’ve played thus far in the season.
They play their 17th match of the season against Manchester Utd on December 17, 2023, a game that the Arsenal legend believes would be an easy win for Jurgen Klopp’s Reds.
Pertaining to the same, Merson told Sportskeeda,
“People keep saying this is a big game, but is that really the case? I think this is my easiest call of the weekend – I expect Liverpool to win quite comfortably.”
In his column in SkySports, the Englishman elaborated on the Anfield Giants’ offensive play on the field, whilst highlighting five scorers namely, Mohamed Salah, Luis Diaz, Cody Gakpo, Diogo Jota and Darwin Nunez. He asserts that the Reds, best known for their attacking style of play, can follow through to victory by using their forwards.
“If they can keep Virgil van Dijk fit at the back, the forwards will get the goals and that is why I think Liverpool have every chance of winning the title.”
He went on to focus on Mohamed Salah’s prowess in their comeback win against Crystal Palace on December 9, 2023. Merson compared the Egyptian player to the likes of legends such as Wayne Rooney and also went as far as calling him one of the top five players in the world. Having netted 11 times in 16 games, the captain of the Egyptian national team is the top scorer of this season.
Pertaining to this he wrote,
‘In a way, I feel sorry for Salah. I really don’t think he gets the credit he deserves for what he’s done and is doing at Liverpool. He’s similar to Wayne Rooney for me in that regard. He was another who didn’t get the credit he deserved.”
He continued to write:
“Salah puts up figures that blow everyone away. 200 goals from Liverpool already, playing on the right wing. It’s extraordinary. What Salah produces at the highest level is just mind blowing. He’s definitely in the top five players in the world for me. He always gets massive goals in massive football matches, and I can’t speak highly enough of him as a player.”

In addition to a fortified forward line-up, the Reds also have in their arsenal, a world-class manager with crucial experience winning the Premier League. The initial struggle to sync the new combination of attackers was partially a reason for their brief setbacks. However, Jurgen Klopp has managed to foster a system such that the combined front line serves as one of their key strengths.
