Stats show why Liverpool star Joe Gomez is being lauded by the Kopites on social media after his dominating performance
Impressive stats solidify the reason why Kopites lauded the fantastic performance of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez. Liverpool drew 1-1 with league-leaders Arsenal in the Premier League clash at Anfield on Saturday.
The Reds left-back Kostas Tsimikas suffered a serious injury during the first half after a reckless tackle from Bukayo Saka. Tsimikas crashed into Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp and fractured his collarbone as Gomez replaced him in the 35th minute.
The Reds are already without Andy Robertson, sidelined with a dislocated shoulder and estimated to return in January. Gomez showed his versatility by slotting into the left-back position to do the job for his team against Saka.
The 26-year-old [Gomez] thrived despite the daunting task of battling one of the Premier League’s best right-wingers in a make-shift position. Football stats-based site Squawka used its X account to convey the incredible stats that showed Gomez’s dominating performance. They wrote:
“Despite coming on in the 35th minute, Joe Gomez made more tackles than any other player against Arsenal (6), while none of his teammates made more clearances (5). Dealt well with Bukayo Saka.”
Gomez has featured mostly at the right-back position for the Reds, letting vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold play in central midfield. The 26-year-old’s preferred position is centre-back but he is behind Ibrahima Konate and Virgil van Dijk in the pecking order.
The England International received scrutiny last season for failing to perform and the nagging injuries that hampered his Liverpool career. Many fans and pundits believed that he had regressed and could not play at a top club anymore.
However, this season Gomez has proven his doubter wrong as he continues to deliver consistently strong performances. This season, the team has utilized the 26-year-old in various positions including center-back, right-back, and left-back, highlighting his versatility.

Gomez is continuously looking to end his duck in front of the goal as he has taken many shots recently. The Kopites do not appreciate when fullbacks take wayward shots from outside the box to squander opportunities. However, Gomez has shown more precision and it is only a matter of time before he breaks his duck. The 26-year-old deserves all the applause and admiration that he is receiving from the Liverpool fanbase. Due to numerous injuries in the senior team, Gomez will play a crucial role in the upcoming fixtures.
