Liverpool are planning an “attack” for Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio to address their defensive troubles

Liverpool are planning to intensify their pursuit of Sporting CP defender Goncalo Inacio during the January transfer window. They are currently facing a serious injury crisis in their defence department in the middle of the congested fixture period.

The Reds lost Kostas Tsimikas to a collarbone fracture during the 1-1 draw against Arsenal at Anfield. They are already without Andy Robertson since the October international break with the left-back expected to return in January.

Furthermore, Joel Matip suffered a season-long injury and the experienced defender’s contract expires at the end of the season. Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez have an unreliable history of injury despite their immense talent and ability to deliver performances.

Gomez is the only senior team left-back option available currently and with too many games coming thick and fast. He has delivered fantastic performances in his make-shift role, showcasing versatility but he would need game-management amid this congested schedule.

Portuguese publication Jornal de Noticias (h/t Liverpool Echo) reported that Liverpool are desperately looking to add Inacio to their ranks. However, Sporting CP will consider parting ways with their best defender if a club meets his £52m release clause.

At a young age, Inacio has already established himself at the international level for the Portugal national team, accumulating significant experience. The 22-year-old is mature beyond his age with the built and athleticism to thrive in the physically demanding Premier League.

The Portugal international is a ball-playing centre-back, capable of distributing accurate passes and driving forward from the backline. Inacio uses calmness and strong anticipation to make well-timed tackles and interceptions, using right body movements to dispossess attackers.

The 22-year-old prefers to play as a left central defender but he is versatile enough to play as a left-back. Inacio fulfills all the requirements desired by the Reds right now and possesses immense potential. The justifiable release clause is an added bonus for Liverpool, known for making shrewd business decisions instead of splashing cash.
