Barcelona are planning to secure the signature of Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara in a pre-contract agreement on January
Barcelona are targeting Liverpool midfielder Thiago Alcantara with a pre-contract agreement during January. Thiago’s contract runs out at the end of the season, allowing Barcelona to negotiate terms from 1st January onwards.
The 32-year-old has not played for Liverpool since the game against West Ham United last season on April 26, 2023. Thiago underwent hip surgery at the beginning of May which has kept him out of action till now.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp expects Thiago to return to action during the next month in January. The Spaniard is a welcome addition as Wataru Endo leaves the Reds to participate in the Asian Cup for Japan.
Spanish publication Sport.es reported that Barcelona are planning to sign Thiago with a pre-contract agreement. The former La Masia prodigy would be an option to bolster their midfield for the next season.
Thiago has struggled with injuries since joining Liverpool from Bayern Munich in the summer of 2020. The Spaniard played a pivotal role during the 2021-22 season when the Reds came close to the historic Quadruple. However, Liverpool won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, missing out on the Champions League and the Premier League.
Thiago featured in only 28 games last season in all competitions, managing only an assist. The Spaniard’s poor season coincided with the struggles of the Reds as they failed to qualify for the Champions League.
During the summer, Klopp successfully revamped the midfield to build his Liverpool 2.0 while many aged players departed the club. The Liverpool boss is deploying Trent Alexander-Arnold in a midfield role this season whenever he can. The midfield has become stacked due to the emergence of Stefan Bajcetic and the potential permanent transition of Trent to midfield in the future.
The Kopites adore Thiago but they understand that the Spaniard is in immense wages which he has failed to justify. As things stand, we believe Thiago’s injuries and age make him surplus to the requirements at the club.

It is highly unlikely that Liverpool would extend the 32-year-old’s contract at the club. Nevertheless, we hope that Thiago ends his Liverpool career by helping the new team win trophies this season.
