Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez during the January transfer window

Tottenham Hotspur has reportedly shown interest in making an audacious move to sign Liverpool defender Joe Gomez during the January transfer window. Spurs lost Christian Romero to a long-term injury and Gomez is their primary target to replace the defender.

Liverpool are facing an injury crisis of their own in the defence department after a season-ending injury to Joel Matip. Kostas Tsimikas sustained a collarbone fracture against Arsenal, sidelining him for a long duration.

First-choice left-back Andy Robertson sustained a shoulder injury during the October international break, estimated to return in late January. Gomez has played as a make-shift left-back and currently is the only option available to play there.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has used Gomez as a right-back, a centre-back and a left-back during this season. The 26-year-old has delivered fantastic performances, showcasing his incredible versatility and ability to play anywhere in defence.

The Englishman faced criticism last season for poor performances that coincided with the struggling performance of the whole team. Many naysayers believed that Gomez’s issues with injuries since his ascension to the senior team, got the better of him.

However, Gomez has proven his doubters wrong by showcasing his defensive formidability throughout the current season. The 26-year-old has also shown his offensive side this season, bombarding forward whenever he played as a fullback.

Klopp has deployed Gomez as a deputy to the vice-captain Trent Alexander-Arnold whenever Trent played at central midfield. The 26-year-old has made 24 appearances for the Reds in all competitions, providing two assists so far this season.

The Daily Mail reports the interest from Spurs in signing Gomez from Liverpool during the January transfer window. The London side’s defensive woes persist as they’ve lost Romero and Micky van de Ven remains sidelined, contributing to their ongoing struggle in conceding goals.

We think that Spurs are better off searching for a defender elsewhere as Gomez is too important for Liverpool. The versatile defender is currently the only left-back option for Klopp and despite that, he remains an important centre-back option.
