Liverpool are readying to rival Manchester United to sign Bayern Munich star Joshua Kimmich during the January transfer window. The Reds are currently at the top of the Premier League table but the competition is too tight.
Aston Villa, Manchester City and Arsenal are just a couple of points behind, leaving no margin for error. Liverpool could use the January transfer window to bolster their squad to make sure they end the season strongly.
The Reds have also progressed through to the Europa League knockout stages and the Carabao Cup semi-finals. Meanwhile, they will lose their only natural number six Wataru Endo as he represents Japan in the Asian Cup.
Liverpool have deployed Trent Alexander-Arnold as a number six but an injury crisis in defence negates that option. Trent’s right-back deputy Joe Gomez is playing as the left-back due to injuries to Kostas Tsimikas and Andy Robertson.
Spanish outlet AS (h/t Mirror) indicated interest from both Liverpool and United in securing the deal for Joshua Kimmich. United are having a nightmare season and they want to add another midfielder after Mason Mount and Soyfan Amrabat failed.
There has been a long debate about Liverpool needing a number six to bolster their title opportunities. Many fans and pundits expect manager Jurgen Klopp to find a solution in the transfer market to shift Trent centrally.
Yet, disregarding the chance to sign a world-class player like Kimmich would be a missed opportunity. The 28-year-old is currently playing in the peak year of his career and thriving at Bayern despite his potential availability.
Kimmich is versatile enough to play at right back and central defence apart from the number six role. The 28-year-old impresses with his renowned playmaking ability, teamwork, work ethic, and technical qualities.
The footballing world regards the Germany international as one of the premier midfielders, demonstrating comprehensive abilities in the midfield. While Kimmich fits the profile that Liverpool desires, his wages and price are a big obstacle for Liverpool. We think Liverpool would want to bolster their defence before any other position after the long-term injury to Jole Matip
