Media warning issued by Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp about misquoting proves true as Sky Sports immediately misquoted him. Sky Sports has deleted the post since receiving a backlash from the Kopites for continuing their clickbait modus operandi.
The media have used Klopp’s comments over serious issues to increase engagement by misquoting or changing the context. Football fans have expressed unwanted outcry due to this practice, while crucial issues that require attention continue to fester.
The Liverpool boss has faced scrutiny many times when his words spread like a Chinese whisper. Nevertheless, Liverpool’s biggest opponents this season have been officiating and match-scheduling more than the clubs they compete with.
The Reds are currently sitting at the top of the Premier League table and actively pursuing every title. Klopp’s team have successfully progressed into the Europa League last-16 and the Carabao Cup semi-finals, showing consistency and determination.
Liverpool have dropped many points this season when a controversial decision went against them. The Reds have three legitimate goals disallowed this season, one came during their only Premier League loss against Tottenham Hotspur.
The away game against Spurs also involved two controversial red card decisions against the Reds which completely tilted the game. Furthermore, Liverpool have suffered three blatant handballs in three draws against Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal.
While many experts want to keep the discussion on VAR and the use of technology, the main issues are the officials. A few points separate the top four teams, highlighting the negligible margin of error at the summit. At the same time, Liverpool have dropped at least nine points in crucial games where obvious decision went against them.
Klopp directly addressed the media (h/t BBC Sport/X), highlighting that they frequently misquote or take his statements out of context. He said:
“I really don’t think that I should answer this question. You know, it’s not that you use me. I give you too often the opportunity to use my phrases, and then it’s intended to set the things we discussed is not interesting anymore. It’s just what Klopp said and it doesn’t help. And that’s what I cannot.”
The Liverpool boss eventually answered the reporter’s original question about scrapping VAR. The 56-year-old provided the answer eventually, emphasising the need to use it properly instead. He said:
“Take away VAR? Oh, my God. Take VAR away. No. Using VAR better is probably the right thing and I think could be done.”
Amusingly, Sky Sports proved Klopp right immediately by misquoting him in an attempt to sensationalise, using his words as clickbait. They wrote in a now-deleted post:
“Oh my God, take me away… Using VAR, we are better”. Jurgen Klopp has rejected suggestions VAR should be scrapped as controversies continue”
The media has used Klopp’s words to enable to football fans’ tribalistic mindset despite everyone suffering from it. The German manager voiced complaints about the excessive number of games hurting the players’ fitness. Furthermore, he criticized the scheduling, specifically pointing out the unfairness of early kick-offs.
