Jurgen Klopp unwilling to let Thiago Alcantara go despite interest from Barcelona

Liverpool’s defending ace Thiago Alcantara has been out of the club’s official fixtures since the last five games of the Premier League’s previous season. This was the result of an unfortunately persistent hip injury for which he underwent surgery last May. According to The Mirror, the Reds manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed that the 32-year-old is scheduled to get back in action this month.

Meanwhile, in the topflight of Spanish football, FC Barcelona suffered a huge blow as their central midfielder Pablo Martín Páez Gavira aka Gavi has been out since last month due to a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament. Barca are currently vying to secure a strong midfielder to their ranks by dipping into this month’s transfer market.

Alcantara has managed to get into the Spanish club’s wish-list to replace Gavi. The La Masia graduate boasts four La Liga titles and ten trophies at the first-team level. The former Barcelona player’s history with the Spanish side and his Premier League makes him an ideal option to reinforce Barca’s midfield.

Thiago Alcantara unlikely to reunite with his former club in the January transfer window

However, it unlikely that the Reds manager would be open to selling his star performer. The Spaniard’s presence has become further imperative, a fact that is attributable to the Merseyside’s current state. Liverpool are without the services of Endo, who is on international duty with Japan.

Klopp’s reliable defenders like Kostas Tsimikas, team’s captain Andy Robertson and Joel Matip are out due to injuries suffered on the field. In such a case, Alcantara’s return would reinforce the club’s defence.

Although Alcantara has not played more than 25 games since he’s joined the club in 2020, his performances during his appearances have earned him high esteem.

Star performers being benched out has not stopped Klopp’s men from dominating the Premier League table this season. The club’s system set in place by their German head coach has propelled them to close 2023 as the first placed team. The fans will be hoping Liverpool can continue in the same vein for the rest of the season.
