Liverpool centre-back’s time in France may come to an end if Jurgen Klopp calls him back
Liverpool’s centre-back, Billy Koumetio, made his debut for the Reds in December 2020 during the 1-1 draw with Midtjylland, following which he secured a starting role in the subsequent Carabao Cup campaign. Recognizing the player’s potential, Liverpool’s manager, Jurgen Klopp, decided to loan Koumetio to Austria Wien in June 2022 to garner additional experience and refine his skills on the field.
However, his time with the Austrian side proved less productive than anticipated, leading to an early termination of his loan after just 11 appearances. Koumetio returned to Merseyside in January 2023 and staged an impressive comeback by scoring two spectacular goals in Liverpool U21’s 4-2 victory over Paris Saint-Germain U21s.
Subsequently, Koumetio embarked on his second loan with USL Dunkerque in August. Regrettably, this second loan stint also appears to be less fruitful, with reports from ‘Liverpool ECHO‘ suggesting that the 21-year-old has been absent from the club’s training sessions after nine starts for the French side.
Liverpool could recall Billy Koumetio amidst underwhelming loan spells
The French media outlet La Voix Du Nord asserts that there are expectations of Billy Koumetio’s loan deal being prematurely terminated. However, both Liverpool and Dunkerque have not issued an official statement on the matter.
However, the defender was benched out for the French club’s 3-2 win over Saint-Omer last week in the third round of Coupe de France. Koumetio’s exclusion from the game, despite him not being injured, could be a direct indicator of his loan spell ending with Dunkerque.

The undisclosed reason behind the centre-back’s absence adds a layer of ambiguity to the situation. This revelation is disheartening, particularly considering that Koumetio’s loan spells have yet to unlock the potential that he initially showed when he joined Liverpool. As we await further developments, there arises the question of whether Jurgen Klopp will chart another transfer course for the young loanee or incorporate him into the Reds’ line-up for the remainder of the Premier League season.
