Former Liverpool target Donyell Malen is potentially available in the January window after Borussia Dortmund secured Jadon Sancho’s loan deal

Liverpool are facing a transfer conundrum as their former target Donyell Malen is potentially available in the January transfer window. Previous linked as a potential replacement for the Reds’ legend Mohamed Salah, Malen’s place at Borussia Dortmund is currently insecure.

Dortmund has just secured a loan deal for Jadon Sancho from Manchester United. Despite the productive season for Malen, Sancho’s arrival puts pressure on his position in the squad.

Sancho enjoyed a very productive tenure at Dortmund before joining the Reds’ historical rivals where he failed. However, the Englishman held a lot of goodwill, and he could move up the pecking order immediately.

Writing in his exclusive column with CaughtOffside, Christian Falk addressed the current situation surrounding Malen since Sancho’s arrival at Dortmund. He wrote:

“Sancho’s arrival would put a lot of pressure on Donyell Malen. He could be sold immediately. There was an idea of a swap deal with Manchester United for Sancho – they didn’t go for it. But if there is an offer coming from the Premier League for Malen, Dortmund will be open to talks.”

Malen has made 23 appearances for Dortmund in all competitions so far, contributing with six goals and two assists. His productivity last season and young age earned him transfer interests from many top clubs in Europe.

In September 2023, Sports Bild reported that Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp sees Malen as the potential successor of Salah. At that time, Saudi Pro League clubs showed keen interest in the Egypt captain as the Reds rejected £150m bid.

The petulant links have cooled off since the Saudi Pro League failed to attract a significant amount of fan base. Furthermore, Salah continued to dominate in goalscoring and assist charts despite his change in tactical role.

The 31-year-old remains an indispensable player in the Reds’ squad, and he will not leave the club anytime soon. Meanwhile, Liverpool have shown their attacking department is fully capable of working around the Egyptian’s absence.

Liverpool have continued their winning form into 2024 despite Salah’s departure in early January due to AFCON competition. As things stand, it is highly unlikely that Malen is a Liverpool target with priority lying on defensive recruitment in coming transfer windows.
