Liverpool in pole position to land long-term Manchester United transfer target

Liverpool are leading the race to sign OGC Nice defender and long-term Manchester United target Jean-Clair Todibo

Reports suggest that Liverpool are leading the race to sign OGC Nice defender Jean-Clair Todibo, continuously linked with Manchester United. The Reds and their historic rivals, Man United are both facing an injury crisis and need to revamp their defences.

Liverpool are currently at the top of the Premier League table despite the injury issues, particularly in defence. The Reds are taking the cup competitions seriously, having progressed in the Europa League and the FA Cup.

Furthermore, they have beaten Fulham 2-1 in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals. Liverpool are playing Joe Gomez in a make-shift role as a left-back due to injuries to Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas. Joel Matip has sustained a season-ending injury and his current contract with Liverpool expires at the end of this season.

French publication Nice-Matin reported that Liverpool are in pole position to sign Todibo during the summer. Todibo has enjoyed a great season with Nice so far as they are second in the Ligue 1 table.

The 24-year-old is a modern-day defender with physicality and height combined with technical aspects in his game. The Frenchman thrives in both the aerial and ground duels, showing great athleticism and presence in the Nice defence.

He thrives in high-pressing and high-line tactics, attacking the opponents instead of allowing them to make a move. The France international deploys aggressive tackling and interception but maintains his discipline by using timing and good game-reading.

Liverpool have a fantastic recruitment and scouting department which helps in making the right decisions with patience and proper judgment. The Reds would revamp the defence after successfully revamping the midfield in the summer and attack in previous windows. There are many talented defenders in Europe currently and Todibo is one of them. However, the Reds have yet to decide if they will prioritize signing him in the summer.
