Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville made an amusing prediction, hyping Tottenham Hotspur to finish over Liverpool this season. Neville further advised Spurs to lose the FA Cup fixture against Manchester City and solely focus on the Premier League.
The Reds are currently at the top of the Premier League table, five points ahead of Spurs. Furthermore, Liverpool have a game in hand after Spurs drew 2-2 to United at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The Reds are facing an injury crisis and absent players due to international duties. Nevertheless, they have maintained a consistent winning streak, advancing in all the competitions they participate in.
Liverpool have only lost one game in the Premier League this season and it happened against Spurs. The game involved a series of controversial decisions going against Liverpool, ending with a final-minute own goal from Joel Matip.
Curtis Jones received a straight red card for slipping over the ball and catching the opponent. The authorities have controversially disregarded similar incidents, including Chelsea’s Malo Gusto’s tackle against Fulham last Saturday.
Furthermore, Liverpool had a legitimate goal from Luis Diaz disallowed and another unfair red card for Diogo Jota. Charity Udogie tripped himself, and then he asked the referee to book Jota, resulting in one of Jota’s two yellow cards.
Neville told Sky Sports that Spurs can finish higher than Liverpool this season despite the difference in positions. He said:
“If they keep their players fit, they are a certainty to finish in the top four and I think they can get to second and third. With those players back, and if they can get through these next few weeks, I genuinely think they can be better than Arsenal and Liverpool this season. It might end up being a good draw in the FA Cup against Manchester City. Go out of that and concentrate completely on the league. But they do need to win a trophy.”
The Manchester United legend has made several controversial and openly biased statements this season against the Reds. Liverpool fans on social media recently criticized his commentary during the Reds’ game against Newcastle United.
Meanwhile, Liverpool needs to continue taking one game at a time, building upon their successful first half of the season. The Reds have faced every obstacle with bravery and a strong mentality, and they will succeed by staying consistent.
