Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher put the finishing ability of Liverpool star Diogo Jota over the four attacking icons he played with. Carragher claimed that Jota has better finishing ability than Michael Owen, Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres, and Robbie Fowler.
Liverpool beat Bournemouth 4-0 in the Premier League showdown at Vitality Stadium to stay at the top of the table. The Reds’ attacking lineup played without their best attacker, Mohamed Salah and many doubted their chances against in-form Bournemouth.
However, two goals from Darwin Nunez and two goals from Diogo Jota in the second half secured an impressive victory. The attacking department showed fantastic lineup play, fluidity and movements which caused problems to the Cherries’ defence.
Jota has scored 11 goals and provided four assists in all competitions from 22 appearances so far this season. The 27-year-old has made 135 appearances for the Reds, contributing with 52 goals and 21 assists since signing in 2020.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Carragher claimed Jota is more clinical than the likes of Owen, Suarez, Torres, and Fowler. He said:
“I think of some of the strikers I’ve played alongside: Michael Owen, Luis Suarez, Fernando Torres, Robbie Fowler. I think he [Jota] is the best finisher. Robbie (Fowler) maybe [could be ahead of him] in terms of pure finishing, hard and low, into the corner. But [his two goals against Bournemouth are] typical Jota. When he gets the chance he is so clinical. This season, he’s got a goal or an assist every 84 minutes. There’s only two or three players in the Premier League who are higher than that.”
Carragher has played with all the four Liverpool icons during his long tenure as the Reds’ defender. Take the comparison as an immense praise for what Jota has already showcased for the club.
The Portugal international is a natural poacher, capable of scoring clinically with both of his feet and keeping composure. Furthermore, he makes clever runs and movements in both tight and open spaces which helps both him and his teammates.
The 27-year-old has an uncanny ability to beat any tall defenders by anticipating the delivery and hitting strong headers. Despite his lack of height, Jota is capable of scoring headers with power and precision.
Jota has played a pivotal role in the absence of Salah and needs to continue his strong form this season. The Portuguese’s only kryptonite has been his issues with injuries or else he is one of the best finishers to put on the Reds’ jersey.
