Liverpool ready to ‘table offer’ for Atalanta star Teun Koopmeiners
There comes the annual speculation surrounding Liverpool FC’s potential pursuit of Atalanta midfielder Teun Koopmeiners. While Jurgen Klopp has played down the prospect of January signings, Italian newspaper La Gazzetta Dello Sport via FourFourTwo suggests otherwise, indicating that the Reds sit prepared to make a significant move for the 25-year-old Dutch international.
That is as per FourFourTwo via ECHO. Koopmeiners has been making waves in Serie A for almost forever. And this season more so, showcasing his versatility and effectiveness in the midfield. With seven goals and four assists to his name in 26 appearances across all competitions, the Atalanta midfielder has caught the attention of top European clubs, with Liverpool as always, “at the forefront” of the race for his signature.
According to the same publication, Liverpool are ready to table a substantial £40m bid for Koopmeiners, signalling their intent to strengthen the midfield ranks. The Dutchman’s ability to contribute both defensively and offensively adds an intriguing dynamic to Liverpool’s midfield options.
Atalanta’s preference to sell Koopmeiners to a team outside Italy aligns with Liverpool’s potential advantage in the pursuit. The Reds could face competition from Newcastle United, but financial considerations at St James’ Park may open the door for Liverpool to secure the Dutch midfielder unopposed.
Should the Reds pursue Teun?
To be honest, Koopmeiners would have been a solid addition last season. The only reason he no longer comes across as someone who would add a lot of quality to the Liverpool squad this season and beyond is the fact that we profiled similar players over the summer transfer window and brought three of them to the team.
The likes of Alexis Mac Allister, Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch are all very similar to Koopmeiners in terms of the Dutchman’s best ability, which is box-to-box. Moreover, Macca can play as a DM, Szobo can fit in as an AM or on the wings, and Gravenberch is the carbon copy of the player Koopmeiners is, but younger by four years and has loads of potential as well.
In essence, while Koopmeiners has shown his prowess in Serie A and other continental competitions, the existing midfield options at Liverpool might make him seem like a surplus addition.

Klopp’s tactical vision and the long-term plans for the squad will guide any decision regarding Koopmeiners. If the Dutch midfielder brings a unique set of attributes that align with Liverpool’s style of play and strategic objectives, he could still find a meaningful role within the team in case he joins the Reds.
