Jamie Carragher vouches for Xabi Alonso to take over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool

Jamie Carragher has thrown his weight behind Xabi Alonso as the potential successor to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool. Alonso, who is currently managing Bayer Leverkusen, has emerged as the front-runner for the managerial role, pending an agreement between Liverpool and Leverkusen.

Carragher expressed his support for Alonso’s candidacy, citing the Spaniard’s limited but impactful managerial experience and his remarkable achievements with Bayer Leverkusen. Despite his relatively short tenure in management, Alonso has steered Leverkusen through a notable transformation and has 2.11 PPG at the German club.

Carra highlighted Leverkusen’s rise under Alonso, from a precarious position in the relegation zone to challenging for top honours in Bundesliga and European competitions.

Xabi Alonso leads the race to take over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

Speaking on the Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, here is what Carragher remarked:

“For me, if we’re talking about who should come in, I think it should be Xabi Alonso. He is very inexperienced in management, having managed just sixty or seventy games, but what you would have straight away is the club on side.”

“He’s the type of guy that if he came in, he’d have the crowd straight away.”

The Liverpool legend highlighted Alonso’s impressive managerial stint at Bayer Leverkusen, where he almost secured Champions League qualification and reached the semi-finals of the Europa Conference League and has also gone unbeaten this season across all competitions.

The former Liverpool defender acknowledged Alonso’s exposure to top-tier managerial influences during his playing career, having been managed by notable names like Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa Benitez, Jose Mourinho, and Pep Guardiola. Carragher believes that Alonso’s managerial style, shaped by such experiences, aligns with the brand of football Liverpool appreciate.
