Liverpool striker hogs the headlines for all the wrong reasons after Chelsea game

Liverpool star Darwin Nunez breaks a record for a stat-based site OptaJoe after hitting the woodwork four times

Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez hit the woodwork four times, making an unwanted record, according to stat-based site OptaJoe. The Uruguayan produced a lively performance for the Reds but failed to score a goal despite taking many shots.

Critics have targeted Darwin for his lack of composure and finishing, highlighting numerous missed easy chances throughout this season. Nevertheless, the 24-year-old has produced a healthy output despite his poor luck in front of goals.

Liverpool beat Chelsea 4-1 in the Premier League clash at Anfield to stay at the top of the table. Apart from the penalty miss in the added time of the first half, Darwin used strong technique to score. The unprecedented bad luck baffled the fanbase as his shots continued to bounce off the woodwork.

Nunez played a pivotal role in Liverpool’s strong display despite his poor luck, creating a wonderful assist for Luis Diaz. The Uruguayan international has 11 goals and 11 assists from 34 appearances in all competitions so far this season.

Darwin’s incredible output in both goals and assists shows the impact and importance he has despite the struggles. The British media has been relentless in downplaying Nunez and chastising him as a potential flop despite his contributions.

The 24-year-old’s unfair treatment shows a bigger double standard from the media as they continue to back many struggling forwards. Media has shielded Manchester United’s big-money signing, Rasmus Hojlund, despite his subpar contribution on the field. Likewise, Arsenal’s Kai Havertz and Chelsea’s forward line find themselves overlooked, despite their underwhelming goal tallies in the Premier League.

OptaJoe reported (h/t X) that Nunez is the first player on record since 2003-04 to hit the woodwork four times in a single Premier League match. Despite facing bad luck and unfair media coverage, Darwin receives unwavering support from the Reds fanbase and coaching staff.

Nunez’s contributions are well-known and appreciated by anyone with a decent level of football knowledge. The chaotic forward’s ability to link up and continuously act as a constant threat gives a big advantage to Liverpool.

Nevertheless, Nunez needs to work on his decision-making in front of goals as that is hindering his composure. The 24-year-old has the technique and ability to score from anywhere, but he becomes double-minded with thoughts at times.

Liverpool needs Darwin to continue playing with the same confidence and drive despite the bad goalscoring luck. The Reds will play title rival Arsenal next in the Premier League showdown at the Emirates Stadium.
