Paul Robinson believes in the quality of Xabi Alonso but considers the task of succeeding Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, “impossible”
Former Premier League goalkeeper Paul Robinson backs Xabi Alonso to succeed Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp but delivered a warning too. Robinson believes that the task of succeeding Klopp as the Reds’ manager is “impossible” due to what he has accomplished.
Klopp announced that he is stepping back from the managerial role after the end of the current season. The 56-year-old explained that he was feeling burnt out and that he was out of energy to fulfil the responsibility.
Liverpool fans have struggled to come to terms with the upcoming departure of their beloved manager but understand his need. Respecting the German’s decision, the utmost priority lies in ensuring his physical and mental well-being.
The media has linked numerous managers to succeed Klopp, but Xabi Alonso has emerged as a firm favourite so far. The former Liverpool midfielder has a strong bond with the fanbase and all the tactical acumen to succeed Klopp.
Speaking to Football Insider, Robinson supported the idea of Alonso taking over but also provided a stern warning to him. He said:
“He should get the opportunity. Xabi Alonso has proved he is a quality manager. But for me, they’re huge shoes to fill. What Jurgen Klopp has done at Liverpool with the trophies he’s won is incredible. For the next man in, it’s a really difficult task. I wouldn’t want to be the next manager in, I’d want to be the one after him! The manager who replaces Klopp – it’s almost an impossible task. If you don’t pick up the baton and win trophies, it’ll be a problem. But the one after him – that’s the job you want because to follow someone of Klopp’s quality would be so hard.”
Alonso is currently managing Bayer Leverkusen as they lie at the top of the Bundesliga and are unbeaten this season. Leverkusen appointed Alonso last season when the German club fell into the relegation zone after a poor start.
The 42-year-old guided Leverkusen to a decent finish, achieving the Europa League qualification in the process by finishing sixth. Alonso installed his philosophy, and style of play and made some fantastic summer signings to boost his team.

Despite the lack of experience, the Spaniard has shown all the tactical knowledge he has gained from several world-class managers. As a professional player, Xabi played under Carlo Ancelotti, Rafa Benitez, Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola, earning vast managerial knowledge.
