Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp jokes about the potentially bad consequences of the blue cards based on refereeing during Burnley’s victory

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp claimed that the game would be the “Wild West” when referees had a blue cards available. Referee Tim Robinson generated seven yellow cards in total including a yellow card each to managers Klopp and Vincent Kompany.

Liverpool beat Burnley 3-1 at Anfield in the Premier League clash to retain the top position in the Premier League. The hard-fought game involved numerous refereeing decisions that annoyed the home fans as well as the Reds manager.

Despite the successful season so far, the Reds have faced unnecessary struggles due to poor refereeing decisions. They have dropped several points this season in the games that contained critical and blatant decisions going against them.

Liverpool have lost two games this season out of which one came against Tottenham Hotspur earlier this season. The away game at Spurs involved two controversial sending off and a legitimate goal disallowed by poor VAR implementation.

The blatantly controversial and one-sided decision-making cost the Reds three points in that game. Furthermore, the games against Manchester United, Chelsea and Arsenal involved three clear-cut handballs within the penalty area. Referees opted to ignore the incidents instead of rightfully awarding Liverpool a critical penalty, costing them more crucial points.

As things stand, Manchester City could take the top position in the Premier League by winning their game in hand. In such a close title chase, every decision matters and Liverpool have lost many points due to numerous bad decisions.

Klopp told Sky Sports after the Burnley victory that the blue card would be a disaster under trigger-happy referees. He said:

“It was emotional, definitely. Imagine in this game the referee had a blue card available. It would have been the wild west. There were so many yellow cards today. I had no clue why Vincent Kompany got it. I lost it in that situation so fine, give me a yellow card. As long as I don’t get a blue one and have to sit somewhere for 10 minutes.”

Against Burnley, Robinson brandished yellow cards quickly while letting go of many fouls that riled Klopp up to react. The new rules are making it hard to bring accountability in the refereeing jobs, opening a path for abuse of power.

The blue card rule would destroy the beautiful game as they can manipulate the outcome of the game even more. Every job on this planet comes with constructive criticism which helps in upholding integrity and room for improvement. While refereeing is a tough job, this is not the right way to help them do their job properly.
