Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp praises Alexis Mac Allister for his professionalism and ability to play in different positions
Jurgen Klopp highlighted the professionalism of Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister as he continues to deliver consistent performances. Mac Allister has been one of the most important and consistent performers for the Reds this season.
The Argentinian joined Liverpool from Brighton & Hove Albion during the summer transfer window as Klopp revamped the squad. Mac Allister started the season in a new role as the number six while new defensive midfielder Wataru Endo adjusted.
However, the 25-year-old’s strong performances in his new role allowed Klopp to use him in deeper positions more regularly. He has also operated more as a central midfielder alongside Endo when the two players played together.
Mac Allister has made 27 appearances in all competitions for Liverpool, contributing with two goals and two assists so far. He made the most tackles (nine against Bournemouth) by a Liverpool player in a Premier League game in the last three seasons. The Argentinian also made eight tackles against Chelsea in the next Premier League fixture, winning 25 duels across two games.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference (h/t Liverpoolfc.com), Klopp praised the professionalism of Mac Allister as he continues to deliver. He said:
“That he can [play] different positions, that he has the tactical brain to do that, shows and says everything about him as a player because I don’t think he is really bothered about [it]. I am not sure we ever heard anything about that, that he said, ‘I would prefer to play a bit higher…’ and stuff like this. We don’t restrict players in these moments. They have the ball and we all have to defend; we have the ball, we all have to attack.”
The 25-year-old played in a more advanced role at Brighton but he has shown his ability to take more responsibility. While his performances have gone under the media’s radar, the Liverpool fans have thoroughly praised his contribution.
"I'm really happy with my goal and the most important thing, of course, is the three points."

Mac Allister on #BRELIV win:
Even the Argentina national team deployed Mac Allister in a more moderate role contrary to his advanced role in midfield. His new role allowed him to contribute to both the defensive and the offensive phases of the game.

Liverpool are currently facing a serious injury crisis that is threatening all the hard work they have done this season. With Dominik Szoboszlai, Thiago Alcantara, and Curtis Jones sidelined, Mac Allister must play a crucial role. It was certainly the case against Luton Town, with him securing two assists as the Reds came back to secure all three points.
