Jurgen Klopp takes no prisoners as he gives scathing indictment of refereeing standards at Wembley

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp chastised referee Chris Kavanagh for his horrible officiating throughout the Carabao Cup final

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp questioned where referee Chris Kavanagh is up to the level to officiate for the Carabao Cup final. Kavanagh made several disastrous calls during the final favouring Chelsea, including a red card incident and disallowing a legitimate goal.

The Reds are missing numerous senior team players due to injuries and selected many Academy players for the matchday squad. Nevertheless, Chelsea started the game by making multiple cynical challenges that could have easily been yellow cards.

Chelsea midfielder Moises Caicedo eventually made a very malicious challenge on Ryan Gravenberch, leading to the Dutchman getting stretchered off. Joe Gomez replaced Gravenberch in the 28th minute of the game, adding more misery to the injury-ravaged squad.

In the added time of the first half, Liverpool’s youngster Conor Bradley received a yellow card alongside Chelsea’s Ben Chilwell. Chilwell instigated the incident to bait Bradley into reacting but the 20-year-old maintained his composure throughout the ordeal. Nevertheless, Kavanagh opted to book both players, adding more annoyance for the travelling Liverpool supporters.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk scored a brilliant header from a set-piece situation in the 62nd minute. The VAR asked Kavanagh to review the goal, citing Wataru Endo’s intervention from the offside position to block Levi Colwill.

Kavanagh somehow deemed the incident that happened far away from Van Dijk’s position, significant enough to disallow the goal. Kavanagh continued to influence, riling up Klopp, Liverpool’s staff and the fanbase and ruining the event in the process.

Klopp

told Sky Sports (h/t The Mirror) how Kavanagh’s decision to continue the play when Caicedo stomped Gravenberch baffled him. He said:

“There were two teams that were fighting extremely hard and the referee was not at the level of the game, that’s how it is. I’m sorry for that, I know they’ll make a story out of that but – it wasn’t even a foul? He didn’t even whistle for a foul. And then, the fourth official explains to me ‘we cannot give a card because -‘ oh, good idea. These boys they are, I’m not sure if it is too much or too quick for them but that situation, it was obvious. The doc [docter] came up to me and saw the foot stamping on the ankle – that’s everything you need for a card.”

Liverpool’s Challenges with Poor Officiating and VAR

Liverpool have faced poor refereeing performances since the beginning of the current season. Despite the daunting ordeal and an injury crisis, the Reds have continued to succeed against such odds.

ESPN reported that poor VAR decisions have been harshest against the Reds in the Premier League this season. Meanwhile, rival fans and many personnel in British media continue to feed the narrative that coined the term “LiVARpool”. The narrative has only given these referees and officials more shelter to continue manipulating the games against the Reds.

Liverpool should be several points ahead in the Premier League, dropping points against Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea, Manchester United and Arsenal. Each of these games involved a blatant game-changing decision like handball or disallowing of legitimate goals that have gone against the Reds.

Liverpool have also received the most red cards in the Premier League this season, four of which are heavily controversial. The Reds’ fanbase only desires fairness and consistency in the decision-making while holding every professional accountable, just like in any job.
