Jurgen Klopp gave a concerning update on Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker, making fans grateful for Caoimhin Kelleher staying last summer. In a training session, Alisson suffered a hamstring injury right before the Premier League game against Brentford on February 17.
The Brazil international missed the last six games in all competitions with Kelleher taking the centre-stage in every game. Liverpool are currently facing a serious injury crisis with numerous key players injured for both the long term and short term.
The Reds are currently at the top of the Premier League table and defeated Chelsea to win the Carabao Cup. Furthermore, they have successfully continued their progression in the FA Cup and the Europa League.
Liverpool have an impressive ambition of challenging for all four trophies and they have worked hard from this season’s start. However, the injury crisis threatens all of their hard work as we head into the final stages of the season.
Klopp provided the grim update to the reporters (h/t Fabrizio Romano’s official X account), confirming the longevity of Alisson’s injury. He said:
“Alisson has suffered a serious injury, not a short one. There is no real timescale on it, but it is a proper muscle injury. It’s not a short one. It is a rather serious one, but NOT a season-ending injury”.
Alisson’s loss is a massive blow for the Reds as he is a crucial figure on and off the field. The 31-year-old is one of the most experienced players and a locker-room leader, winning every trophy with Liverpool under Klopp.
Meanwhile, Kelleher has done an impressive job since taking over the number-one goalkeeper role in Alisson’s absence. The Irishman made world-class saves in the Carabao Cup final and the FA Cup fifth round to help Liverpool win.
Many rumours linked Kelleher with a potential exit during the last summer transfer window before the season began. However, the 25-year-old decided to stay despite attracting interest from many top European clubs.
Kelleher’s consistency will be crucial if the Reds want to win more trophies this season after achieving the Carabao Cup. Liverpool fans would hope for a piece of better news about other injured players who are equally crucial to the team.
