Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp warns opposition fans about mocking Darwin Nunez with his dramatic late goal as a fine example
Jurgen Klopp told opposition fans that mocking Liverpool forward Darwin Nunez is a big risk he would never take. Nunez scored a dramatic late goal in the 99th minute to help Liverpool win the Premier League clash against Nottingham Forest.
The Reds beat Forest 1-0 at City Ground to secure the crucial three points, shutting the home fans up. Nottingham’s fanbase resorted to numerous vile chants including the false stereotypes against the city of Liverpool.
After Nunez returned from his injury in the second half, they mocked him with an X-rated chant “You’re a s**t, Andy Carroll”. The chants only bolstered the desire of Darwin to score the critical goal and take all the points away.
Nunez has made 38 appearances in all competitions this season, contributing with 14 goals and 11 assists. Despite facing criticism for being too wasteful, the Uruguayan has been pivotal and prolific for the club. The 24-year-old’s overall contribution and high work rate on and off the ball have endeared him with the Reds’ fanbase.
Speaking in the press conference (h/t Sky Sports), Klopp warned the opposition fans to mock Nunez at their peril. He said:
“I would not sing a song like that. I would not try to wind Darwin up. It is a super-important goal that gives us three points and that is always super-decisive. For him, it is super deserved. Because people are singing that song more often and that’s the best way to calm it immediately down. They can sing it if Darwin responds like he did today. I understood it. I think he understands it. It is the best answer.”
Darwin Núñez has scored seven away goals in the Premier League this season:
