Michael Owen outlines reason why upcoming Manchester City clash is paramount for Liverpool

Liverpool ambassador Michael Owen outlines the reason that makes the upcoming clash with Manchester City more important for the visitors.

Michael Owen stated that the onus is on Manchester City to win the game at Anfield when they face Liverpool. The Reds face the Citizens in the upcoming Sunday for the Premier League clash that could define the title race.

Despite the severe injury crisis, Liverpool have maintained the lead at the top of the Premier League table. However, last season’s treble winners are right behind them in second place with one point separating the two teams.

Diogo Jota, Curtis Jones, Alisson Becker, Joel Matip, Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic are the long-term absentees. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah are also racing against time with their fitness, missing most of the action since January.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has depended on the Reds Academy since the start of the season during the congested fixtures. He has relied more on the youngsters during the injury crisis as they continue to fulfil their manager’s faith.

Regarding the potential title decider (h/t premierleague.com), Owen highlighted that City cannot afford to lose the game. He said:

“It’s going to be special. I don’t think City can afford to lose. If it’s a draw then they’re still in it, cos they’ll go four points behind Liverpool [with a defeat]. That means two bad results for Liverpool between now and the end of the season so I think it’s really important that City don’t lose from their point of view, it’s going to be massive,”

Whether it is an attempt for mind games or Owen stating a usual obvious, both teams cannot afford to lose. Liverpool has a home advantage but the fans are hoping that some of the key players will be available.

The Citizens remain their biggest threat but Arsenal can also capitalise from the result, being two points behind Liverpool. The Reds are facing a daunting challenge as the congested fixtures period has stretched their remaining squad, including the youngsters.
