Former Arsenal youth player Jay Bothroyd makes a baffling statement about Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker, calling him “overrated” on his feet
Football pundit Jay Bothroyd used his platform with Sky Sports to make an unprovoked attack on Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker. The former Arsenal youth player called Allison “overrated” while stating that Ederson is a better keeper than him.
Alisson has been a pivotal part of Liverpool’s success under Klopp since signing from AS Roma in 2018. The 31-year-old is a primary goalkeeper for Brazil, ahead of Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson in the pecking order.
With Alisson sidelined due to a hamstring injury, Liverpool has Caoimhin Kelleher playing in his absence. Kelleher has produced brilliant performances in the absence of the Brazillian, helping Liverpool win the Carabao Cup.
Nevertheless, Alisson remains the primary goalkeeper for the Reds and holds a lot of respect from fans and his peers. The 31-year-old’s contributions over the years earned him the reputation of being one of the best goalkeepers in the world.
Speaking to The Football Show on Sky Sports, Bothroyd made the baffling claim without giving any evidence over the matter. He said:
“I think, if I am honest, Alisson is overrated with the ball at his feet. Ederson is better than him with the ball at his feet. If I am honest, I think Ederson is a better keeper than him. I know some people might not agree with that, I guess it’s who you prefer as a personal preference.”
Liverpool drew 1-1 with Man City at Anfield in the Premier League clash which ended in a big controversy. The Citizen’s Jeremy Doku high-booted Alexis Mac Allister in the final moment which warranted a blatant penalty for the Reds. However, referee Michael Oliver opted to shrug the incident off alongside VAR which cost Liverpool two points.
Alisson Becker has kept a clean sheet for Liverpool in a Champions League final, FA Cup final and Club World Cup final.

Pep Guardiola substituted Ederson after he sustained an injury during the game due to his own mistake. The Man City goalkeeper made a horrible tackle on Darwin Nunez to give away a penalty and injured himself.

Ederson has received criticism for being well below his standards in distributing passes from the back this season. Hence, Bothroyd’s comparison is more baffling considering Alisson has played a key role in helping the Reds succeed this season. Bothroyd is an Arsenal fan and maybe that bias is playing a big role in his judgement.
