FSG eye former Manchester City man to play key role in multi-club project

Liverpool owners FSG want to sign Benfica Sporting Director Pedro Marques

FSG is making significant strides in restructuring the club’s football operations, with the latest move being the pursuit of Benfica technical director Pedro Marques. This strategic appointment follows the recent announcement of Michael Edwards’ appointment to the CEO of football role, signalling FSG’s commitment to revamping Liverpool’s sporting setup.

That is as per The Athletic [subscription required]. Marques sees himself targeted by FSG to leverage his expertise and skills in building a new structure that stands aimed at attracting global talent. While Marques would sign for FSG rather than directly for Liverpool, his extensive experience and connections in the football industry make him an invaluable asset for such a project.

The Portuguese technical director is no stranger to Liverpool, having been involved in negotiations during the club’s talks to sign Darwin Nunez from Benfica in 2022. Additionally, Marques has ties to former Liverpool sporting director Julian Ward, having worked together at Manchester City where Ward served as a scout.

Capturing the broader football world

Marques’ professional journey includes stints at Sporting Lisbon and Manchester City before joining Benfica in 2018 as the youth technical director. His tenure at Benfica has earned him a strong reputation within the industry, further solidifying his credentials for the role envisioned by FSG.

This move by FSG aligns with their ongoing efforts to restructure Liverpool, particularly following the announcement of Jurgen Klopp’s departure at the end of the season. Edwards’ appointment was a significant step in this direction, and Marques’ potential addition to the team underscores FSG’s commitment to building a robust football infrastructure outside of Liverpool as well

With Edwards assuming a more prominent role within the organization, Marques’ addition to the team, alongside Richard Hughes’ potential appointment as Sporting Director further strengthens Liverpool’s leadership structure and positions the club for long-term success.

He does look like Jose Enrique’s long-lost brother, doesn’t he?

With FSG’s leadership and Marques’ expertise potentially at our disposal, Liverpool fans can look forward to an exciting future filled with continued success and achievements on and off the pitch.
