Liverpool defender Joe Gomez acknowledges he owes Jurgen Klopp a lot besides backing him to return to the England squad

Joe Gomez said he owes Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp a lot, acknowledging him backing the defender for the England return. Gomez joined Liverpool under former manager Brendan Rodgers in 2015 but Klopp took over immediately in that season’s October.

He is the only player that Klopp inherited who remains at the club through all the ups and downs. The 26-year-old has developed both as a player and as a man under the guidance of the German maestro.

Despite the nagging injuries throughout his career, the Englishman has continued to play a key role in the Reds’ squad. Gomez’s versatility allows him to play in numerous defensive positions for the team when required due to tactics or injuries.

The Englishman is comfortable on the ball with both feet but he prioritizes his defensive duties, playing unselfishly for teammates. He has yet to score his first senior team goals despite having the technical abilities on the ball.

The biggest reason for his lack of goalscoring exploits is due to the set-piece duties where he stays back. The 26-year-old has played more adventurously this season, particularly during his spell at the left-back position, attempting to score.

Speaking with the media (h/t Liverpoolfc.com) before the friendlies, Gomez acknowledged he owes Klopp a lot. He said:

“The gaffer at the club is one of a kind and I obviously owe a lot to him. He has been probably the biggest influence on my career, or definitely. It’s nice to have that support from your manager. I definitely didn’t ask him to do it! But he has obviously been a massive influence on me, not just as a player but as a person, so that was obviously nice of him.”

Gomez has also played as a defensive midfielder during the severe injury crisis, ready to do whatever the team requires. This season, he has played as a right-back, centre-back, left-back and number-six for the club, according to Klopp‘s requirements of him.

Liverpool have enjoyed a successful season, still competing for the Premier League and the Europa League. Furthermore, they have already secured the Carabao Cup trophy with Gomez playing a pivotal role among the academy players.
