Andy Robertson suffered a potential injury during the March international break, creating huge concern for Liverpool ahead of a crucial period. The 30-year-old twisted his ankle during the friendly match between Scotland and Northern Ireland on Tuesday, limping off the pitch.
Robertson suffered a shoulder injury during the October international break when Scotland played Spain in the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers. The injury sidelined the Scotland captain for more than two months, missing 24 games for Scotland and Liverpool in total.
The 30-year-old remains the first-choice left-back for the Reds ahead of Kostas Tsimikas in the pecking order under Jurgen Klopp. Liverpool deployed Joe Gomez as a make-shift left-back amid the injury crisis that took out both of their specialist left-backs.
Speaking after the friendly (h/t Sky Sports), Scotland manager Steve Clarke insisted that Robertson needed more assessment for his injury. He said:
“He’s just come off the pitch, let the injury take its course. He’ll go back to his club and they’ll assess it and hopefully it’s not too serious.”
Liverpool are currently fighting Manchester City and Arsenal in an intense Premier League title race, second in the league table. Furthermore, they will play Atalanta in the Europa League quarter-final in April, continuing their pursuit for more trophies this season.
The injury crisis have taken a lot of toll during the season but the Reds have continued to carry forward. Meanwhile, plenty of players from Man City and Arsenal stepped away from international duties, making random excuses.
Liverpool crashed out of the FA Cup after losing the Manchester United with fatigue playing a crucial role. During the final 15 minutes of the extra time, the Reds conceded two goals after the players barely continued. United had a terrible season, crashing out of the Champions League and the Carabao Cup early, helping them stay fresh.
The Reds would prefer that the mistake will not happen twice during the final stages of the season. With the Premier League and the Europa League on the line, they are hoping their best players including Robertson return to full fitness soon.
