Gary Lineker sends clear warning to the next Liverpool manager after Jurgen Klopp departure, with Xabi Alonso stepping back

Gary Lineker has issued a word of caution to whoever will step into Jurgen Klopp‘s shoes as Liverpool manager, particularly after Xabi Alonso made it clear he plans to remain at Bayer Leverkusen.

Many had predicted that the former Liverpool midfielder, who is presently leading Leverkusen to their first Bundesliga title and an unbeaten season, would be Klopp’s successor.

The German, for his part, is winding off a phenomenally successful spell at Anfield, where he has won multiple titles and continues to compete for more.

Gary Lineker’s views on the situation

On the podcast The Rest Is Football, Lineker confessed that the monumental task of succeeding such a popular coach as Klopp would not be one he’d eagerly undertake if he were a manager. Lineker said:

“It’s impossible, really, to have continued success decade after decade. It’s so hard to do that. There was always going to be a period where things didn’t quite happen for them. That happened and they then went through managers rather than giving it to the next in line.”

“Even if I was interested in management, I would not want the job after Klopp. I’d want it the one after that. When you have got a personality that is so dominant at a football club, for so long, everything is about what he does, his staff, his manner, how the whole club is run.”

It is true that when Jurgen Klopp, the legendary boss, leaves the club, there will be a void that the Reds will struggle to fill. It is no piece of cake to win titles and break records again and again but Klopp did it.

Klopp will not only be missed by his squad but also by the fans worldwide

Klopp will be a tough act to follow, but it should not deter any prospective managers from joining Liverpool. The German will leave behind a collection of rising stars, and with Michael Edwards and Richard Hughes leading the way, the Reds should only get stronger.

More Liverpool news

Missing out on Alonso is a major setback, but you can’t argue with his logic for staying at Bayer Leverkusen. There will be plenty of other managers eager to take the step to Anfield, and Liverpool will be a very appealing possibility, regardless of who they have to follow.
