Jurgen Klopp has insisted Liverpool wouldn’t be pushing to win a treble without goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher. The star goalkeeper has played a key role in Liverpool’s success this season.
The Republic of Ireland international is likely to make his 24th appearance of the season against Sheffield United, matching first-choice custodian Alisson Becker.
The Brazilian had a hamstring injury in February. He is said to be close to returning to training, with many feeling the Reds would have suffered a decline in form without him.
Kelleher has truly stepped into the vacuum left by the Brazilian international, putting in a number of outstanding performances, most notably in the Carabao Cup final
, where his saves laid the groundwork for Liverpool to defeat Chelsea. As far as Klopp is concerned, he’s adamant that his team wouldn’t be in the position they are without the 25-year-old. Speaking ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Sheffield United, he said:
“I think I was never shy of praising Caoimh! Ali out for a long spell would have been a bit of a problem. Not because of Caoimh, but he never had to play that many games so you never know how that would look then, so, it was perfect.”
“And I’m absolutely over the moon, happy for the boys that they can prove their point. I was never in doubt about them but they still have to prove it themselves. That’s wonderful, absolutely, outstanding season. Without Caoimh Kelleher, there is no chance to be in the position we are.”
After the injury to Alisson Becker, many fans were furious. They started believing there is no hope for Liverpool until the return of Ali. But Kelleher has stepped up significantly with a string of outstanding performances.
Kelleher has kept five clean sheets in all competitions this season. He will be hoping to record another shutout against Sheffield United. It is truly interesting to see how wonderfully Liverpool is adapting to the constant changes of the squad and still dominating their rivals.
There is no doubt that Klopp has made a remarkably tough and skilled squad in his nine-year reign. According to the dominance of the squad in the Premier League and the Europa League there are very high chances of the Reds bringing a treble home for the stylish exit of their legendary boss.
