Patrik Berger advises Liverpool star and Jurgen Klopp’s favourite, Caoimhin Kelleher, to leave the club soon, as staying here would be a ‘waste of time’
Jurgen Klopp appears unlikely to be the only guy to depart Liverpool during the summer transfer window, as numerous members of his squad, like Caoimhin Kelleher are about to come in for heavy interest from rival teams.
Caoimhín Kelleher has been in fine form for Liverpool this season. The goalkeeper, though, advised that he should consider leaving the club by Patrik Berger. He explains that if Kelleher stays, it would be a waste of time for him.
Kelleher worked his way up from Liverpool’s academy in 2019 and was previously the understudy to first-choice custodian Alisson Becker. However, Alisson’s hamstring injury in February provided Kelleher with significant playing time this season.
Kelleher has undoubtedly done himself proud by assisting Klopp’s club in reaching the Premier League summit. In a recent interview, Klopp praised and revealed that the Irishman had become his favourite player. The boss said:
“I think I was never shy of praising Caoimh! That’s wonderful, absolutely, outstanding season. Without Caoimh Kelleher, there is no chance to be in the position we are.”
Former Liverpool player Patrik Berger believes Alisson will recover the number one jersey once he is ready and believes it is time for Kelleher to consider other options before it is too late.
Berger told Premier League Odds (h/t Mirror):
“Jurgen can rotate players and change the formation to fit certain players in there. With keepers, it is just different. Alisson is number one, so as a number two you don’t get that many games.”
“But Kelleher has kept us in so many games since he has come in. Thanks to him, we are where we are, because he has saved us so many points already this season.”
“It’s a waste of time if you’re just sitting on the bench, so I don’t know what the contract situation is, but he has had the taste of being number one and he is too good to be a number two in my opinion.”
The Irishman has impressed; having conceded just five goals in his six games since taking on the gloves, Kelleher has been a key part of Jurgen Klopp’s side’s surging into the top spot.
Kelleher finds himself in a difficult predicament. He has demonstrated that he is more than capable of playing as a number one for a good Premier League team. Liverpool, on the other hand, will be reluctant to let him go, given his importance this season.

Finally, the club will have to decide what is best for the player. If it implies he wants to go and be number one somewhere else, they may have to give him his dream. Hopefully, he chooses to stay and can eventually surpass Alisson.
