Chris Wilder expressed his thoughts on the Premier League title race after watching his Sheffield United team fall to Liverpool on Thursday night.
Chris Wilder makes his Premier League title wish clear after Liverpool defeated Sheffield United at Anfield on Thursday night. Wilder’s team pushed the Reds all the way after Conor Bradley‘s own goal tied the game in the second half.
Alexis Mac Allister and Cody Gakpo then sealed the win for Liverpool, who are now one point below Arsenal and on the same points as Manchester City with only eight games remaining.
Sheffield United finds itself languishing at the bottom of the league, staring relegation in the face with a daunting 10-point gap from safety.
Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder expressed his support for Liverpool’s title ambitions after his team’s defeat at Anfield. Despite the setback, Wilder showed sportsmanship, as according to the reports he was telling a Liverpool staff member while boarding the coach:
“I hope you win it – I mean that.”
The comment came after Wilder’s press conference, in which he reflected on the challenges his team faced against Liverpool. He said:
“Playing at Anfield in front of 60,000 going into the last 10 games of the season, it doesn’t come more difficult for anyone, especially Sheffield United and the gulf between the two clubs. I just think the physical aspect of the game in the Premier League now has taken an incredible step forward.”
“From my point of view, it’s a difficult one to take. You want the players to give everything that they’ve got and you’ve certainly seen that from the team tonight.”
“They’ve given everything they’ve got over the last three games but physically the gap where you’d need to be, I’d like to be and want us to be and where we are at the moment, it hurts. It’s hurt all season and yet again it’s cost us tonight.”
Wilder’s team performed admirably at Anfield, but Liverpool’s talent eventually shined through. His comments about Liverpool and its title chances highlight his admiration for the club and Jürgen Klopp. With eight games remaining, the Reds are well-positioned to finish the season on top.
