Joe Gomez believes that Liverpool are on a mission, leaving no room to dwell over the praises he received. Liverpool are currently second in the Premier League table with a game in hand, playing Manchester United on Sunday.
A victory would take the Reds two points ahead of currently first-place Arsenal with seven games remaining. Liverpool are also playing Atalanta in the Europa League quarter-finals in April intending to win the competition.
They have navigated through a severe injury crisis and numerous extraneous factors that were obstacles during this campaign. Gomez has played a pivotal role amid the injury crisis, filling up the voids left by the important injured players.
Gomez told Liverpoolfc.com in the pre-match interview that he appreciates the praises he received but he cannot dwell on it. He said:
“Yeah, I obviously appreciate it. Everybody knows how long I’ve been here and what the club means to me, but I think it’s about laser focus, taking it one game at a time. We’re obviously on a mission here and there is no time to dwell or rest on our laurels or think about where we’ve come this season. It’s just about trying to see it out and getting what we can from it, which hopefully is the cream of the crop.”
Gomez has played as a right-back, left-back, centre-back and holding midfielder during this season, maintaining the consistency in performances. The 26-year-old has played 43 games in all competitions for Liverpool, contributing with three assists this season.
Despite having defensive duties as his main priority, the Englishman showed his adventurous side in numerous games. Gomez has not scored a senior-level goal in his career and has attempted to score his first goal.
The 26-year-old’s contribution also earned him the England call-up during the March international break after more than three years. Liverpool needs to make sure that they end the season strongly to fulfil the hard work Gomez and many players in the squad have done throughout this season.
The remaining fixtures include away games against Fulham, West Ham United, Everton and Aston Villa which are very tough. Furthermore, the Reds will host Tottenham Hotspur in one of the remaining fixtures at Anfield.
