Barcelona legend advises Liverpool star not to leave Anfield in the summer amidst PSG interest

Liverpool star forward Luis Diaz wishes to move to Paris St-Germain but ex-Liverpool player Mascherano warns him not to do so

Liverpool must decide this summer whether to extend star winger Luis Diaz‘s contract or transfer him due to interest from Paris St. Germain and other clubs. The former Liverpool player Javier Mascherano has urged Luis Diaz to reject a move to PSG and remain at Anfield.

Diaz, 27, has been a huge success at Liverpool since joining from Porto for about £37.5 million in the January 2022 window. The star winger has helped the Reds by scoring 13 goals and notching four assists in 43 appearances.

According to the Telegraph, PSG has spoken to Diaz’s agent about a potential move away. Diaz made the decision that he would like a new contract at Liverpool this summer or that he would accept the move.

Star’s performance have caught the eye of PSG

Javier Mascherano’s warning

His performances have caught the attention of PSG, who are looking for a new attacker after Kylian Mbappe leaves this summer. The French giants are becoming interested in the Colombian international.

However, Mascherano, who played for Liverpool for four years before moving to Barcelona, believes Diaz would be making a mistake by departing. Instead, the Argentine icon has stated that Anfield is the ideal location for him. Mascherano said:

“He is a great player, very decisive especially when it comes to playing in one-on-one duels. The truth is that I think he has arrived at a team that fits him just right.”

“If there is something that Liverpool have is that they love players like Díaz who leave everything on the field and have that strength and leave everything on the field. That’s why I think he fits right where he has arrived.”

Diaz has an important decision ahead of him

The Reds were “shocked” by Diaz’s request because his current contract is not up until 2027. The Liverpool hierarchy is really unhappy with the way the player and his agent handled this situation.

Given the red lines around permissible losses under profit and sustainability criteria, timing the sale of players has become as important as signings and extensions.

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp is leaving the club at the end of the season. So now the fate of Diaz could land in the hands of the upcoming manager of the club. With Xabi Alonso out of the picture, Ruben Amorim is the current favourite to replace Klopp.
