In the opinion of former Liverpool player Jamie Carragher, if the Reds are to surpass Manchester City, one thing needs to change. He has cautioned
Liverpool that if it is to win the Premier League this season, it must take more chances.A terrible week came to an end on Sunday when Crystal Palace defeated the Reds at home. The outcome means that Manchester City, who defeated Luton 5-1 to take the top spot in the standings, has eliminated the Reds’ chances of winning the title.
If Liverpool had defeated Palace, it would have been one point ahead of the pursuing group due to Arsenal’s loss to Aston Villa. But with six games remaining, everything is now dependent on mistakes from both City and the Gunners.
The Reds were wasteful in front of goal at Anfield once more, failing to score for the second straight match following their shocking 3-0 Europa League loss to Atalanta.
The 2-2 draw at Manchester United the week before was a similar tale, and former Liverpool defender Carragher is certain of the harm it has caused. Carragher said on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“It has to change. I think Liverpool’s xG in this run is around nine and they have scored two which is not great.”
“For it to finish like that and go like that right now at the most pivotal of times is a huge problem for them. There is still time to fix that and get it back.”
“But the nature of the players, it will always be a little bit like that in terms of the numbers we are looking at and the type of players that they are. But, that has to change very quickly if Liverpool are to get back in the title race.”
Given Liverpool’s past performance, it might seem strange to say this, but the team has to do better in front of goal. The Reds have been far too wasteful in front of goal, and their recent defeats by Palace and United may be the reason they lose the title, even if it was rightfully theirs.
Though it’s still early in the race, you wouldn’t want to be depending on City and Arsenal to give up points every time. If Liverpool were to win another championship before Jürgen Klopp departs, they must improve swiftly, regardless of their opponents.
