Fulham captain Tom Cairney makes unusual theory ahead of the Premier League clash with Liverpool, sending surprising warning about Darwin Nunez hat-trick
Fulham skipper Tom Cairney makes an unusual Liverpool theory ahead of the Reds clash with Fulham. The midfielder said that he believes they would be in trouble if Nunez got a hat-trick.
Jurgen Klopp‘s team broke their winless streak against Atalanta with Mohamed Salah‘s penalty in a 1-0 second-leg victory. However, they were unable to overcome their 3-0 first-leg deficit, resulting in the Reds’ elimination from the competition.
Liverpool wasted an opportunity to maintain pressure on the Premier League championship chase after losing 1-0 at home to Crystal Palace. The Reds’ dismay grew when they failed to capitalize on their opportunities against Manchester United.
Fulham captain surprising Liverpool admission
Speaking ahead of Sunday’s game against the Reds, Tom Cairney refrained from discussing Liverpool’s recent setbacks. He told Sky Sports (h/t Liverpool Echo):
“I am not going to say too much, I am not going to say ‘they can’t finish, just in case Nunez gets a hat-trick. We have played them three times this season. I am sure you watched the League Cup, we lost by a goal over two legs and we had an amazing 4-3 game at Anfield earlier on in the season.”
“Listen, I have never seen them in a bad game. They are a supreme football team. Amazing to watch for the neutral. Play forward. Aggressive. Counter-pressing.”
“We have always played well against Liverpool. But I am expecting a reaction, it’s going to be a tough, tough game. I won’t say they will miss most of their chances. I am sure they will create a few.”
Darwin Nunez already has a decent name for himself at Craven Cottage. The 24-year-old scored against Fulham on his debut at Craven Cottage last season after moving to Anfield in the summer of 2022.
Nunez’s season has been somewhat decent, as he racked up 48 appearances, scored 18 goals, and provided 13 assists for the Reds across all competitions this season.
This season has been rough for Nunez, as he has been catching up on several injuries that cost him a couple of weeks worth of playtime. His form has been hit due to the injuries, as the attacker failed to perform up to the expectations he had.

Tom Cairney’s expectations from Nunez are justified, as there is no doubt the attacker could still do wonders. After their exit from the Europa League, Liverpool’s full focus is now on performing their best to win the Premier League.
The Reds have a decent chance at that, as they currently sit in third place, just two points away from the leaders, Manchester City. It will be interesting to see how the Reds make a comeback from this stage.
