Jamie Carragher reflects on Liverpool’s managerial disarray

For the longest time, Bayern Leverkusen manager and former Liverpool midfielder Xabi Alonso saw himself as the favourite to take over from Jurgen Klopp as the Reds manager. However, ever since that ship sailed, Sporting CP boss Ruben Amorim emerged as the frontrunner.

Recent revelations from The Athletic [subscription required] said that Amorim is also unlikely to move to Liverpool with Premier League rivals West Ham United also showing interest. In response to that article, Jamie Carragher has a very interesting insight into the managerial situation at Liverpool.

Carra, who has 737 appearances for the Reds across all competitions, knows a thing or two more about Liverpool than the next best person. In a tweet, he spoke about how Liverpool’s imminent Sporting Director, Richard Hughes, eyed a move for Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi during his time at Bournemouth.

RDZ to Liverpool?

Now, De Zerbi has also seen himself extensively linked with the Liverpool job. He has done a great job at Brighton and was wonderful last season. Even though teams have found loopholes in the Seagulls’ style of play this season, that doesn’t take away from the fact that De Zerbi is a bloody good manager.

In 83 matches in charge of the club so far, he has 1.57 PPM. He has a decent record against Liverpool as well, winning two of his five matches against the Reds, scoring 11 goals across said games.

Carra’s insights provide a deeper understanding of the managerial considerations at Liverpool. While the club’s initial targets may not be available, the potential interest in De Zerbi offers a promising alternative. As Liverpool navigates through this pivotal period, identifying the right candidate to lead the team forward remains paramount.
