David Ornstein sheds light on the future of Liverpool winger Luis Diaz
27-year-old Colombian international Luis Diaz has been decent for Liverpool throughout the season. In the last few weeks, the player has been better than he has for other parts of the season. Despite that, there seems to be an air of uncertainty about his long-term future with the Reds.
That mostly stems from his links with Barcelona with the player’s father also accepting that Lucho would want to play for the Catalan giants one day. Nevertheless, he was a topic for discussion on The Athletic FC podcast with David Ornstein sharing what he knows about the former Porto man’s situation.
“I’ve already heard from multiple contacts they’re [Liverpool] looking for a wide player. I don’t know if that’s to add to what they’ve already got.”
“Is it because there’s been speculation around the future of Luis Diaz, who’s yet to sign a new contract, which is quite unusual for a player who’s done so well. He’s been linked with moves elsewhere; let’s wait and see on that.”
Is it his links with Barca or the fact that he earns less than the likes of Nathaniel Phillips and Adrian at the club? He earns roughly £56,000 per week and deserves a rise without a shadow of a doubt. However, Luis Diaz is the one player apart from Trent Alexander-Arnold who would earn the Reds a good payday from clubs in Europe.
Lucho!
To know if Barcelona are in a position where they can afford his transfer fee is a big deal to start things off. If his sale means Liverpool can generate enough money to pool into the squad again, then why not? Let’s be real. 13 goals and five assists in 48 appearances is as replaceable as replaceable could get.
In terms of on-field impact, Diaz’s departure may not pose a significant setback for Liverpool. The Reds have a history of seamlessly transitioning between players and adapting to new challenges. Diaz’s exit, while regrettable, may provide an opportunity for other players to step up and fill the void left by his departure.
Our pursuit of a wide player, as Ornstein suggests, could gain traction with time. That is one development we can surely keep an eye on, especially considering our interest in Crysencio Summerville of Leeds United.

Ultimately, whether Diaz stays or departs, Liverpool must approach the situation with pragmatism and foresight. It may appear like the club did not give him enough time to have an impact, but two and a half years is a substantial period of time. Let’s see how things on that front for himself and the club.
