Former striker urges struggling Liverpool star to identify his style of play

Former Liverpool striker Stan Collymore asks Darwin Nunez to decide whether he is a goal scorer or a creative threat

Stan Collymore believes Darwin Nunez needs to tell the next Liverpool manager Arne Slot what he brings to the team. Collymore provided his example when he played alongside Robbie Fowler and decided to be more of a creator at Liverpool.

Nunez has faced severe criticism for his poor composure in front of goal despite being very productive this season. The 24-year-old has played a pivotal role for the Reds this season despite the team’s failure to achieve multiple trophies.

While the intention of some criticism was constructive and mutually beneficial for the forward and the team, many were malicious. People driving social media are ready to say anything controversial to create engagement, which serves as their source of income. Furthermore, the unverified nature of many big accounts pretending to be Liverpool fans and creating a toxic narrative is a norm.

Darwin recently blocked many accounts on social media and removed pictures related to Liverpool from his Instagram. While his action is justified, many fans worry that the forward is unable to differentiate between actual fans from trolls. The Reds fanbase has thoroughly supported the Uruguayan forward throughout his ups and downs with the club since his signing.

Writing in the exclusive column for CaughtOffside, Collymore advised Nunez to introspect his role at the club before next season. He wrote:

“If he’s honest, he’ll know whether to stick or twist with the Reds and a new manager, as well as those doubting his ability. Is he a Fowler, Rush, Torres, Mo or Suarez? No, of course not, but only he can answer whether he can do it or not. Me? I had to completely change my game to adapt to Robbie Fowler who I knew who would outscore me, so I created a lot for him while scoring at a good rate too. If Nunez can do that then he has a chance to be a resounding success for several years at Liverpool, but if he doesn’t, then for him and the club he’s better off moving because there’s nowhere to hide at Liverpool and the intensity of the analysis isn’t going anywhere.”

Liverpool’s struggle with composure in front of goal played a big role in their downfall as the attacking department misfired. The Reds’ best finisher Mohamed Salah also missed numerous clearcut chances while Diogo Jota continued to struggle with injuries.

While many fans still have faith in Darwin to fulfil his potential, there is a consensus that Liverpool needs a clinical finisher. The Reds cannot afford a repeat of this season’s misfortune after getting too close to incredible success.
